History

Petershill Football and Athletic Club were formed on Friday 4th June 1897 at a meeting in Thomson’s Coffee house, Castle Street in the Townhead district of Glasgow. At a meeting in the same venue three weeks earlier, St. Mungo’s Juniors were disbanded after a disastrous season in the Glasgow Junior League. At the end of the meeting, it was stated that anyone interested in forming a new club on a wider scale, to represent the Springburn and Townhead area, should sign their name on a sheet of paper as they left the meeting. Over twenty signatures were obtained, and along with several other interested football fans, the “Peasy” were born. The first officials of the club were as follows: -

President:    J. H. Potter         Vice President:    P.J. Lavery

Secretary:    John Baxter    Treasurer:    Stephen Pullman

Match Secretary:    Archie Blue

The club colours of maroon shirts and white shorts were adopted at the suggestion of the match secretary Archie Blue, who was an ardent Hearts fan, and they remain the club colours to this day. Arrol Park, home ground of the defunct St. Mungos, was acquired, and remained the home ground for the first six seasons. In the first season, Petershill entered the Scottish, Glasgow and North Eastern Cups. They lost 4-2 to Vale of Clyde at Fullarton Park in the Second Round of the Scottish Cup, and again lost out to the “Tin Pail”, this time by 4-0 in the semi final of the Glasgow Cup, played at Celtic Park. In the North Eastern Cup, they lost 3-0 away to Glencairn in the second round. In all fixtures in the first season, Petershill won a creditable 14 games out of the 30 that they played, including friendlies against some of the top junior sides of the time.

The club were elected to the Glasgow Junior League for season 1898-99 and finished second bottom of the 10 teams. The Peasy won their first trophies in season 1902-1903, beating Maryhill 5-1 at Saracen Park to win the North Eastern Cup, then beating them again by 1-0 at Meadowside to win the Glasgow Charity Cup. The Scottish Junior Cup was won for the first time in 1912, with a then record 5-0 over Denny Hibs in the final played at Firhill. The trophies have been coming ever since, with the “Holy Grail” of the Scottish Junior Cup being won again in 1916 with a 2-0 win over Parkhead, and again in 1918, but without playing the final, after both the other semi finalists, Parkhead and Renfrew, were disqualified for refusing to play the 2nd replay of the semi on the Wednesday before the final.

The post war years were a real “boomtime” for junior football, but Petershill in particular had their own peak in the 1950‘s, with 21 honours being won, with only 1957 being a barren year. The club had lost out to Auchinleck Talbot in the 1949 Scottish Junior Cup final, but they won their 4th Junior Cup in 1951, in front of a record Hampden crowd of 77,560, they beat Irvine Meadow XI by 1-0, the goal scored by Jimmy White with 12 minutes left. Petershill then won their only League Championship and Scottish Cup double in 1956, with Lugar Boswell beaten 4-1 in front of another huge Hampden crowd, and the league Championship won with a 4-0 win over Parkhead. The silverware has kept on coming over the years, and the Club won its 100th Trophy in 2004, beating Maryhill 2-0 in the Central League Cup Final.
